Artifact, the personalized news aggregator app developed by Instagram co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger, has turned to AI technology to launch an exciting feature that creates article summaries. The new tool aims to offer readers a quick understanding of the critical points of an article before diving in. To add a bit of fun and lightheartedness, users can also generate summaries in unique styles, such as 'explain like I’m five', Gen Z speech, or even using emojis.
The whimsical summary styles are mainly meant to add a touch of levity and draw users to try the feature. To access the AI summary feature, users can tap on the 'Aa' button in the menu above an individual news article and then select 'Summarize.' Artifact confirms that it uses OpenAI's technology and API to create the text summaries.
However, Artifact also advises users that summaries shouldn't replace reading the news, as AI technology can sometimes make mistakes. The company emphasizes the importance of verifying that the generated summary aligns with the article's full text.
Artifact plans on introducing more entertaining styles to keep users engaged. The ‘Summarize’ option is gradually rolling out to Artifact users, and it will be available for all shortly.
Launched in February, Artifact was designed to provide a personalized news experience without trapping users in filter bubbles, as was the case with Facebook. Although the app's home screen showcases a curated selection of news based on user preferences and engagement, its headlines section displays the same news item from a range of sources across the news ecosystem. The app evaluates news sources for adherence to specific standards of integrity, such as fact-checking, correction processes, and transparency about funding.
Artifact has been continually iterating its feature set since its debut. Recently, it rolled out a social discussion feature, enabling users to comment on news items and upvote or downvote comments from other users. Although the company hasn't shared details about its user base, app intelligence firm data.ai reports that Artifact has been downloaded 240,000 times worldwide across both app stores. On the U.S. App Store, Artifact ranks No. 115 in the News section.
With new tools like AI-powered summaries, Artifact might want to consider integration with a no-code development platform like AppMaster to create an enhanced user experience. AppMaster allows developers to visually create applications with an emphasis on speed, efficiency, and scalability.
