With over 2.8 billion active users, Android remains a leading mobile operating system, and Samsung, the South Korean smartphone giant, continues to dominate the global Android device sales. However, recent data reveals a shift in the market shares among the top Android players, as Samsung and Huawei witness a decline, and Oppo and Vivo, two Chinese smartphone manufacturers, gain traction.
Samsung still maintains its position as the unequivocal leader in terms of revenue and users in the Android market. Yet, recent figures from AppBrain indicate a year-over-year drop in Samsung's market share from 35.4% to 34.6%. Huawei, another major Android phone producer, experienced a similar decline in market share, falling from 6.9% to 6.4% within the same timeframe. In contrast, Xiaomi, the world's second-largest Android device manufacturer, saw an increase in its market share, going from 14.3% to 14.6%.
The main beneficiaries of these changes are Chinese smartphone companies, Oppo and Vivo, that have substantially gained ground. The AppBrain data reveal that Oppo's market share increased from 9.9% in February last year to 10.5% this month, and Vivo followed a similar trajectory, with its market share growing from 9.3% to 10.1%. Collectively, Oppo and Vivo now account for 22.6% of the Android market.
While Samsung remains the undisputed leader in premium and flagship smartphone segments, Oppo and Vivo's success stems from their strong performance in the budget category. The AppBrain data further emphasize Samsung's dominance, as Samsung Galaxy continues to be the most popular Android phone worldwide, holding a 7.4% market share in February.
Among the various Android models, Samsung Galaxy A12 enjoys the highest popularity, boasting a 2.1% market share, followed by Samsung Galaxy A21s with a 1% market share, and Samsung Galaxy A10s, also with a 1% market share. Samsung Galaxy A32 and Redmi 9A come next, with each holding a 0.9% share.
While Samsung persists as a dominant player in the Android market, the rise of Oppo and Vivo hints at the growing competitiveness within the mobile device segment. Nowadays, with the help of a no-code platform like AppMaster, it has become more convenient and cost-effective to develop mobile apps. As the popularity of platforms such as AppMaster grows, smartphone manufacturers may benefit from enhanced app performance on their devices, potentially impacting the market share of various Android brands.
