Mendix, an industry leader in low-code development, is poised to integrate advanced generative AI capabilities into its platform by the end of this year. The company's ongoing experiments with GPT-based features aim to enhance the app development process and provide valuable guidance on adhering to best practices.
Over the past few months, Mendix has been diligently developing generative AI functionality for its popular low-code platform. According to Amir Piltan, Senior Product Manager of AI at Mendix, the company anticipates making these features available to enterprises before the year concludes.
Piltan stated that Mendix had access to GPT (Generative Pretrained Transformer) technology while it was still in beta, well before its public release by OpenAI. The company utilized this early access to determine the most effective ways to implement GPT technology within its platform. Alongside these efforts, Mendix has also experimented with open source-based large language models, which Piltan reveals boast greater customizability.
Mendix's integration plans focus primarily on two key aspects: application generation and developer guidance. The intention is to harness the natural language processing capabilities of generative AI, empowering citizen developers to create comprehensive, polished applications. However, Piltan clarifies that the first instance of this feature will only provide an initial version of the app, which will require further refinement through the low-code platform's existing drag-and-drop functionality.
Piltan further explained that the platform's generative AI component would guide developers by suggesting best practices and aiding in documentation creation. Enterprise customers across various sectors, including public, hospitality, and insurance, are eager to benefit from these features as the demand for qualified developers continues to outpace supply.
Industry insiders believe the incorporation of generative AI will transform no-code app development by reducing entry barriers to using low-code and no-code platforms like Mendix and AppMaster, eventually accelerating platform adoption.
While Mendix 10, the next major version update, is expected to launch in June, Piltan did not confirm whether any of the new generative AI-powered capabilities would make an appearance. The company has announced plans to release major updates every two years, starting with Mendix 10.
As low-code platforms continue to gain traction, companies like Mendix and AppMaster are making significant strides in incorporating advanced technologies like AI to streamline app development and optimize user experience. These innovations will undoubtedly reshape the landscape of no-code and low-code application development in the years to come.
