Bill Gates Deems AI 'Revolutionary' While Downplaying the Metaverse's Hype
Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates expressed his views on the potential of AI and the metaverse during a recent Reddit AMA. Gates deems AI 'revolutionary', particularly generative AI, while casting doubt on the significance of metaverse technology. With AI advancements, Gates envisions educational and medical benefits through his foundation.

Bill Gates recently shared his perspective on prominent tech buzzwords, expressing that while the metaverse may not live up to the hype, artificial intelligence (AI) has incredible revolutionary potential. Gates participated in his annual Reddit Ask Me Anything (AMA) session, where he discussed his thoughts on significant technological shifts, asserting that AI is the major game-changer worth paying attention to.
"I don't think Web3 was that big or that metaverse stuff alone was revolutionary, but AI is quite revolutionary," Gates stated. Notably, he was particularly intrigued by the advancements in the generative AI domain, where AI models focus on producing new content, ranging from text and images to music. "I am quite impressed with the rate of improvement in these AIs. I think they will have a huge impact," he mentioned.
Given his ongoing involvement with Microsoft, Gates follows this field closely. In the context of his organization, the Gates Foundation, he envisions using AI to provide educational assistance, such as math tutoring for children, and medical support for people in Africa with limited access to doctors.
Interestingly, Gates has previously expressed more optimistic views regarding the metaverse's impact. In his personal blog at the end of 2021, he wrote about being 'super impressed' with advancements in spatial audio, which allows for more immersive meetings with sound coming from the direction of the speaker, similar to face-to-face discussions. "There's still some work to do, but we're approaching a threshold where the technology begins to truly replicate the experience of being together in the office," he mentioned at that time.
Microsoft has been gradually delving into the metaverse as part of its plan to merge digital and physical realms. In October, the company announced a collaboration with Meta to develop platforms and software that enable immersive experiences for work and play. According to Microsoft's Work Trend Index data, half of Gen Z and millennials surveyed anticipated engaging in some aspects of their work within the metaverse over the next two years.
As AI and the metaverse continue to progress, new possibilities and innovations arise for various fields, including education and healthcare.
