Zurich Insurance Partners with Low-Code Platform Mendix to Implement Next-Gen Solutions
Global insurer Zurich adopts Mendix's low-code platform to streamline its workflow and enhance customer experience. With a strong focus on digital transformation, Zurich aims to automate processes and replace outdated applications, improving efficiency and agility.

International insurer Zurich has chosen low-code specialist Mendix to facilitate the implementation of innovative solutions, such as the Terrorism Data Capture system for automated coverage, as well as several other updates. Aiming at digital transformation, Zurich plans to leverage Mendix's low-code capabilities to optimize workflows and improve overall operational and customer experience.
Zurich, which derives two-thirds of its revenue from terrorism coverage, intends to simplify the workflow for over 700 underwriters by replacing crucial legacy applications with the new Terrorism Data Capture solution. This system, developed with Mendix's code, will modernize the underwriting process by minimizing menial tasks and streamlining the collection of customer data and calculation of premiums.
Besides automating the coverage segment, Zurich's collaboration with Mendix will benefit about 1.5 million users by offering a personalized experience through the My Plans Portal. This feature compiles data on user pensions and investments, displaying it in a single location, and is directly linked to Zurich's Salesforce platform.
As part of its digital transformation strategy, Zurich is also focusing on automating IT infrastructures to reduce expenses. The company intends to retire 1,400 outdated Lotus applications that manage business procedures and forms, consequently integrating updated, automated processes in their place.
Barrington Clarke, Head of UK DevOps at Zurich, discussed the automation project, highlighting the age and inefficiency of the legacy Lotus applications, which have led to numerous issues, including shadow IT. He stated, Mendix provides us with the ability to replace, amend, and update these applications, because low-code makes it so quick to do these sorts of activities.
Paul Fondie, Global Industry Principal for Insurance at Mendix, commended Zurich's innovative use of technology to enhance customer and employee experience. He noted that low-code platforms, like Mendix or AppMaster, equip organizations with the necessary tools to navigate digital transformation, a pressing need accelerated by the ongoing pandemic, causing more customers to use online services.
The push for digitalization, primarily driven by emerging fintech companies, has prompted numerous financial institutions to adopt digital strategies to deliver agile and efficient online services. Zurich's collaboration with Mendix is a leading example of insurers harnessing technology to stay competitive in the evolving financial landscape.
