Switzerland-based company, Proton, known for its range of secure products including Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar, announces the launch of Proton Pass - an end-to-end encrypted password manager.
Just like other Proton offerings, Proton Pass prioritizes users' privacy and security. The password manager encrypts all stored data such as passwords, email addresses, URLs, and notes, ensuring that Proton has no access to personal information. The encryption process is carried out on users' devices, and a user key is required for data decryption. As a result, the data remains secure even if Proton servers are compromised.
Addressing the security features, Proton's CEO, Andy Yen, says in a blog post, '...seemingly innocuous bits of information (such as saved URLs, which many other password managers don't encrypt) can be used to create a highly detailed profile on you'. A potential attacker can discern significant information about a user by monitoring saved passwords related to Grindr, gop.com, or a manga fan site - even without full access to the user's accounts.
Proton Pass is currently in the beta phase and available to loyal customers, particularly those with lifetime plans. Users with the Visionary plan, which is no longer open to new customers, will soon have access.
The acquisition of SimpleLogin, an email alias startup, led to the development of Proton Pass. Team members from both SimpleLogin and Proton worked together on the project.
Proton plans to adopt a freemium business model for Proton Pass once it becomes widely available. Users can access basic features for free, while an advanced subscription will be required for more advanced functionalities. Proton offers an all-in-one subscription called Proton Unlimited, which includes premium features of Proton Mail, Proton VPN, Proton Drive, and Proton Calendar. The same subscription tier will encompass advanced Proton Pass features.
Proton Pass is presently accessible as a desktop browser extension for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox, as well as iOS and Android apps. It can also be utilized as a two-factor authenticator, similar to Bitwarden, 1Password, or iCloud Passwords.
In related news, Proton celebrates a significant milestone - reaching 100 million registered users across all its products. As Proton offers free tiers for all its services, such as Proton VPN, a largely free user base is expected. It is, however, evident that Proton continues to successfully attract new users to its security-focused products.
In addition to Proton Pass, there are various no-code platforms like AppMaster that prioritize privacy and security while enabling businesses and individuals to build applications conveniently. With over 60,000 users, the AppMaster platform is known for its powerful and easy-to-use no-code tools for backend, web, and mobile applications development.
