Previewing Android 14: Release Dates, Supported Phones, and Exciting New Features

As we anticipate the arrival of Android 14, codenamed Upside Down Cake, a Developer Preview is available, and the public beta is due soon. Google I/O, happening in May, is expected to bring more news about what Android 14 has in store.

Read on to learn about the release timeline for Android 14, the supported devices, and the new features that have been confirmed or rumored thus far.

Google announced Android 14 on February 8, 2023, and launched the first Developer Preview the same day. The second Developer Preview arrived in early March. The first public beta is slated for the second week of April, with the final beta planned for July. The finished release doesn't have a designated launch month, but August or September is likely based on previous release patterns. The Google IO 2023 developer conference, scheduled for May 10, may also offer more information about Android 14.

With Android, not every device receives the new version on day one due to more volatile support. However, recent Google Pixel phones, such as the Pixel 7 series, Pixel 6 series (including Pixel 6a), Pixel 5 series, and Pixel 4a 5G, will definitely receive the update. Other phones released within the last year or two can also expect the update, along with some older handsets. Devices like the Samsung Galaxy S23 series, Samsung Galaxy S22 series, Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4, Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 4, OnePlus 11, OnePlus 10 Pro, Sony Xperia 1 IV, and Xiaomi 12 are also expected to receive Android 14.

Google has released Beta builds alongside the Developer Preview for Android 14. As not all headline features are included, it is advised to hold onto Android 13 until at least Google I/O. If you're a developer and want to try Android 14, visit Android's official developer site, or check the Android beta site for the public release version.

Android 14 comes with support for satellite communication, similar to the iPhone 14 series. Phone makers, however, will have to equip their devices with the necessary hardware to access this feature natively.

To prevent malicious app downloads, Android 14 prevents users from sideloading apps targeting ancient Android versions. This makes it safer for all users from vulnerabilities in older operating systems.

Google now restricts apps using accessibility services on the Play Store unless they genuinely serve users requiring advanced accessibility services. As a result, customization or functionality hacks relying on these services will no longer work.

Android 14 introduces full support for passkeys, a more secure alternative to passwords. Unlike in current Android versions, third-party password managers like Dashlane and LastPass will be able to store passkeys with Android 14.

Android 14 allows users to set preferred temperature units, calendar types, first day of the week, and number systems to be applied across apps.

Health Connect lets you sync data between health and fitness apps, making it easier to monitor all your data in one location. Android 14 integrates Health Connect directly into the platform.

Android 14 lets users create cloned apps, allowing them to log in with two different accounts simultaneously for apps that don't natively support multiple accounts.

Android 14 includes font scaling up to 200% using a non-linear scaling curve, improving readability for low-vision users.

Android 14 introduces the ability to view a list of apps installed in the background, helping users stay informed about pre-installed apps, potential bloatware, or apps added without user knowledge or permission.

Android 14 brings the ability for users to create custom wallpapers using emojis and offers enhancements to live wallpapers, allowing for greater personalization.

Lastly, Android 14 enables automatic confirmation of correct PINs without pressing 'OK' or 'Confirm,' only for PINs of at least six digits.
