Most Coveted Programming Languages in 2021 and the Top 10 for 2022

Coding Dojo's annual analysis reveals the most sought-after programming languages in the tech industry. Python led the pack in 2021, while Java has overtaken it in 2022.

Most Coveted Programming Languages in 2021 and the Top 10 for 2022

Coding Dojo recently published its annual analysis on the most in-demand programming languages in the job market. The study examines job listings on Indeed to determine which programming languages are the most sought-after by employers and identifies trends that could offer advantages for job seekers.

In 2021, Python maintained its position as the most ubiquitous programming language, appearing in approximately 70,500 job descriptions. The top five was completed by SQL (~69,000), Java (~59,000), R (~56,000), and Visual Basic (~54,000). Surprisingly, JavaScript fell to the sixth spot, with around 50,000 job descriptions mentioning the language. Evidently, the demand for almost every language had decreased compared to 2020, which saw most of them peak.

For instance, although Python retained its lead, it dropped from around 74,000 jobs in 2020 to approximately 70,500 in 2021. However, the demand for most languages remained above their pre-2020 levels. Visual Basic and R were the only two languages where demand increased in 2021 compared to 2020, causing JavaScript's position to slip further down the ranks.

The growing popularity of TypeScript is likely another contributing factor to JavaScript's diminished demand in 2021. Jonathan Sandals, Content Marketing Strategist at Coding Dojo, noted in a blog post that TypeScript and Kotlin also made considerable gains in job listings over the past year. Both languages recorded thousands more jobs than in 2020, seemingly reaping the benefits of the pandemic's impact on the tech industry.

While 2020 saw a pandemic-induced surge in demand for programming skills, the market seemed to cool off in 2021. As the global situation evolves and hints at a return to normalcy, the demand for programming languages is on the rise again. Here are the top 10 programming languages in 2022 (based on open full-time job positions):

Java has now surpassed Python, leading the pack with over 12,000 open positions. JavaScript climbed back to fourth place from sixth, while R and Visual Basic dropped out of the top 10. Notably, the total available jobs among the top 10 programming languages for full-time programmers increased by six percent from 459,000 in 2021 to 486,500 in 2022.

Considering these trends and the constantly evolving demands of the tech industry, no-code platforms like AppMaster have emerged as powerful tools to create mobile, web, and backend applications without requiring extensive knowledge of programming languages. More companies are now leveraging such appmaster.io/blog/build-enterprise-software-with-no-code>no-code development platforms to accelerate their software development processes, making it even more crucial for programmers to stay updated with the latest in-demand languages and trends.
