Mobile Network Operators Face Revenue Losses Due to Flash Calling, Report Reveals

As the usage of flash calling increases, mobile network operators are projected to face significant revenue loss in the upcoming years. According to a recent Juniper Research report, operators are expected to lose approximately $1.3 billion in revenue between 2023 and 2027 due to the inability to detect flash calling.

Flash calling is an alternative calling method that allows businesses to leverage voice networks for customer verification. The process involves using the last few digits of an originating phone number to confirm a customer's identity, thereby replacing traditional SMS authentication techniques. This method has proved to be highly profitable for businesses, leading to a growing number of companies making the switch from SMS authentication.

However, operators' inability to detect flash calling traffic is likely to negatively impact their SMS business revenue. Juniper Research notes that in 2023 alone, network operators will not be able to detect more than 90% of flash calling traffic. The use of third-party firewall providers' detection services is expected to help reduce this percentage to 45% by 2026.

The report recommends that operators employ voice firewall technologies capable of distinguishing between flash calling traffic and traditional peer-to-peer (P2P) voice calls. This approach would enable operators to monetize flash calling traffic and minimize losses in SMS business messaging revenue.

As firewalls identify more flash calling activities, operators must decide whether to ban or monetize the detected traffic. To avoid customer dissatisfaction and maintain the value of voice channels, Juniper Research advises operators to prioritize monetization. The study estimates that as the adoption of voice firewalls becomes more widespread, operators' losses from undetected flash callings will gradually decrease year over year. By 2027, global flash calling revenues are expected to reach $450 million, surpassing the losses from undetected flash calling traffic for the first time.

In light of these findings, adopting innovative solutions is crucial for operators to mitigate the impact of flash calling on their business.
