BSA, a technology advocacy group backed by Microsoft and major business software companies such as Adobe, IBM, and Oracle, has recently released a document urging the United States government to implement regulations governing the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in national privacy legislation. The call for action comes amidst growing concerns about the rapid development of AI technology and its potential consequences.
The BSA's push for AI regulation aligns with the interests of Congress members, including Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, who have expressed an urgent desire to create protective measures alongside AI advancements. Notably, Google, another significant player in advanced AI, is not a member of the BSA.
The advocacy group has suggested four primary protections to be included in AI regulation:
According to Craig Albright, VP of U.S. Government Relations at BSA, the organization aims to draw attention to AI regulation as an essential issue, believing that it has not received the attention it warrants. Albright acknowledges that their proposals may not cover every aspect of AI regulations, but they serve as crucial answers to significant concerns that Congress can address.
Accessible advanced AI tools such as ChatGPT by OpenAI have accelerated the push for more stringent AI regulations or guardrails. AI regulatory frameworks are already being developed in Europe and China, while the U.S. has implemented a voluntary risk management framework. However, advocates argue for stronger, more comprehensive protective measures to be put in place.
BSA suggested the American Data Privacy and Protection Act (ADPPA) as the ideal vehicle to incorporate AI regulations. The group believes this bill's existing framework aligns with the type of national AI guardrails required by the government. BSA is in contact with the House Energy and Commerce Committee regarding their suggestions, hoping that the reintroduction of ADPPA will include the necessary AI regulation language.
As no-code platforms like AppMaster and AI tools continue to advance, effective AI regulation becomes increasingly crucial to ensure the responsible development and deployment of new technologies. BSA's advocacy emphasizes the necessity of embracing AI regulation to stay current with rapid technological progress, maintain both national and international competitiveness, and protect privacy and security in the digital era.
