iDrive Shifts from HDD to SSD to Transform Its S3-Compatible Object Storage Service

iDrive, a prominent cloud storage provider, has announced a major upgrade of its S3-compatible object storage platform, iDrive e2, by transitioning to enterprise-grade SSD storage. The decision sets iDrive apart from competitors like Backblaze and Wasabi in the increasingly competitive S3-compatible object storage market.

By swapping HDD for SSD, iDrive aims to enhance the platform's performance, reliability, and scalability. Despite the significantly higher cost of SSD compared to HDD, iDrive's ability to incorporate and manage thousands of terabytes of enterprise SSD storage without raising costs demonstrates its commitment to innovation.

Currently serving over four million users and managing more than 500 petabytes of data, iDrive has confirmed that its e2 platform holds "petabytes of data." A company representative revealed to TechRadar Pro that the upgraded service is accessible in their Virginia storage region. The firm also plans to expand this enhancement to all 14 worldwide locations, offering users the highest-performing object storage functionality across the globe.

iDrive's expansion to more locations is a strategic move. It not only improves resilience but also outperforms competitors: Wasabi has 12 locations, whereas BackBlaze operates only four. The e2 platform comes with a 7-day free trial offering 1TB of storage, followed by a 90% discount for the first year, with a cost of $4 for 1TB. Alternatively, customers can opt for a $4 per TB per month plan with no Egress fees, delivering an 85% savings compared to AWS S3.

With scalable storage ranging from 1TB to 1PB, e2's price tag increases significantly at higher capacities. For instance, 1PB of storage after the first-year discount would cost $40,000 per year. In contrast, BackBlaze's B2 service charges $60,000 per year for up to 1PB, excluding data download costs. Meanwhile, Wasabi's egress-free service starts at $73,605 for its highest tier of 1PB.

Other competitors in this domain include Digital Ocean (with Spaces and built-in CDN), Bunny, Vultr, Rackspace, CloudFlare, IBM, Alibaba, Microsoft, Oracle, Google, and AWS. Simplicity and transparent pricing differentiate these challengers from established players like Azure. Companies can order a whole petabyte of storage in just minutes, without the need for complicated calculators or confusing fee structures.

Though HDDs remain the primary storage option in data centers due to their affordability (less than $20 per TB), SSDs represent a future in cloud storage services. The recent upgrade by iDrive has the potential to disrupt industry norms and encourage more platforms to move towards SSD.
