Google Announces Flutter 3.7 Update and Previews Upcoming Enhancements at Flutter Forward Event

During this week's much-anticipated Flutter Forward event, Google announced the release of its Flutter 3.7 framework, highlighting the new features now available to developers and teasing upcoming enhancements.

Initially designed as a platform for Android and iOS app development, Flutter has evolved to enable developers to create apps across a range of devices, including desktops and web browsers, using a single codebase written in Dart. To date, the framework has gained over five million developers and seen more than 700,000 apps created with its technology. Ranking as the third most popular open-source project based on GitHub contributors, Flutter is rapidly gaining popularity.

In light of this growing interest, Google has detailed the new capabilities provided with Flutter 3.7 and what developers can look forward to in the near future. One major enhancement in the latest version is improved menu support, featuring native macOS menus, cascading menu widgets, and the option to add items to long-press or right-click context menus.

Furthermore, Flutter 3.7 incorporates multiple Material 3 widgets. Google has introduced an interactive tool to demonstrate the differences between Material 2 and Material 3 that users can try here. Meanwhile, a seemingly minor fix but a significant one for some, text magnification in Android and iOS now functions correctly when used with Flutter's text fields.

Moving beyond the current release, several exciting improvements are in development, such as a new renderer named 'Impeller' that will replace the existing 'Skia' renderer. Google has demonstrated how Impeller offers smoother performance compared to Skia in a recent demo. Flutter 3.7 developers can test Impeller with an opt-in flag for iOS.

Additional upcoming Flutter features include:

Google is also nearing a breakthrough in compiling Dart apps with WebAssembly, which could notably boost performance for Flutter web apps. Full support for the RISC-V architecture is planned for Dart 3.0. As of now, the alpha version of Dart 3.0 is available for testing, with a full release slated for mid-2023.
