The modern digital business landscape relies heavily on databases, yet many organizations are struggling to realize their full potential due to outdated database technologies, such as traditional relational database systems. According to a 2019 Vanson Bourne survey, 72% of enterprises believe their reliance on relational databases hampers their digital transformation initiatives.
Companies are progressively transitioning to modern database solutions, including NoSQL and cloud-based systems, to facilitate scaling, slash costs, and expedite development. Gartner projects that by 2022, 75% of all databases will be migrated to cloud services, signifying a major industry shift.
EdgeDB, an innovative startup, is on a mission to reshape the database landscape with its next-gen architecture. Founded in 2019 by Yury Selivanov and Elvis Pranskevichus, EdgeDB is making waves by refining relational databases with an emphasis on enhancing developer experience.
Going beyond scalability, EdgeDB focuses on making developers markedly more productive than when working with conventional databases – either SQL or NoSQL. Drawing from their experience at the software consultancy MagicStack, the co-founders established EdgeDB to overcome common database challenges experienced by their clientele.
EdgeDB 1.0 was launched in February and boasts an integrated access control system alongside EdgeQL, a query language that Selivanov claims is 10 to 1,000 times faster than traditional SQL, depending on the operation. Upcoming EdgeDB 2.0 is set to introduce a database visualization UI and experimental support for WebAssembly, an open standard for running binary programs in web browsers.
To monetize their open-source approach, EdgeDB intends to offer a managed service built atop its GitHub-hosted codebase. The soon-to-be-launched EdgeDB Cloud will provide an intuitive graphical UI, terminal commands for creating a cloud database instance, and integration with the frontend web app development stack Vercel. EdgeDB Cloud will also track slow queries and suggest optimization strategies, as well as offer built-in performance tracing and turnkey integration with services like DataDog.
The highly anticipated EdgeDB Cloud is expected to begin generating revenue in Q4 2022. EdgeDB, which has raised $4 million from Accel and angel investors such as Greg Brockman, co-founder and CTO of OpenAI, considers its top competitors to be Prisma, Supabase, and possibly PlanetScale. Nevertheless, Selivanov believes EdgeDB's unique value proposition and their upcoming integration with Vercel will help corner the market and appeal to developers worldwide.
In addition to companies like EdgeDB, no-code platforms such as AppMaster are transforming the software development process, making it more cost-effective and efficient for developers and businesses alike. With its powerful no-code tools for backend, web, and mobile applications, AppMaster is another step forward in revolutionizing the software industry and improving developers' productivity worldwide.
