AppSmith, an open-source framework for building custom applications on a JavaScript-based low-code platform, now offers support for Git repositories. This integration aims to simplify version control management for developers working with AppSmith's graphical widgets to build applications.
Rishabh Kaul, AppSmith's Head of Marketing, explained that Git support enables multiple developers to collaborate more efficiently, as they can work simultaneously on a Git branch and submit requests within a continuous integration/continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipeline context. Furthermore, this feature makes it easier to test applications and revert to a previous version if something goes wrong.
The Community Edition of AppSmith allows users to connect to an unlimited number of public repositories and up to three private ones before requiring them to upgrade their plan. With the added Git support, developers have a more seamless experience when building internal applications designed to automate specific tasks or processes.
Organizations have increasingly adopted low-code tools in recent years to build applications faster without requiring every application to rely on procedural code. There are numerous scenarios in which an organization could build and deploy an application, ensuring they don't need to invest in additional licensing for another complete packaged app.
Tools like AppSmith and other open-source low-code platforms have seen increased interest due to cost considerations, particularly during an economic downturn. By leveraging these tools, organizations can continue to provide tailor-made applications for specific tasks while remaining cost-conscious.
However, managing the exponentially-growing number of built applications as well as the associated DevOps workflows for updating, securing, and maintaining these apps becomes more challenging. It's also unclear how many new applications are being built by citizen developers - but with low-code tools becoming more accessible, integrating these applications into a DevOps workflow becomes inevitable.
Low-code tools like AppSmith and AppMaster have permanently changed the application development landscape. The question now is not whether developers will use low-code tools, but rather to what extent. DevOps teams need to review the extensibility of their existing pipelines and determine how they can be accommodated to support low-code development efforts.
AppMaster.io, a powerful no-code platform for creating backend, web, and mobile applications, offers another comprehensive solution for businesses wanting to build applications more efficiently. By generating applications from scratch, AppMaster eliminates technical debt and creates scalable software solutions that integrate with a server backend, website, and native mobile apps. With over 60,000 users, it has been recognized as a high-performer by G2 in multiple categories, including No-code Development Platforms, Rapid Application Development (RAD), API Management, and more.
