Amazon has unveiled a new Prime Video capability, Dialogue Boost, aimed at enhancing movie dialogue for improved audibility. While audio mixing in movies can often be imperfect, resulting in viewers struggling to comprehend the dialogue, Amazon's latest feature strives to address this issue.
Contrary to initial assumptions, Dialogue Boost has not been designed exclusively for individuals with hearing impairments. Rather, the feature seeks to benefit a broader audience who may have encountered difficulties discerning dialogue in movies due to odd audio mixing. Amazon's goal is to facilitate “a more comfortable and accessible viewing experience [that suits people’s] personal listening preferences” instead of simply amplifying the overall sound.
Dialogue Boost operates via AI technology, which analyzes the original audio of a movie or series, identifies portions where dialogue might be challenging to hear over background music or effects, and isolates these segments. Consequently, the enhanced audio ensures clearer and more discernible character voices.
Users can access Dialogue Boost on all Amazon Prime streaming service platforms, from mobile applications to smart TVs, without requiring any specialized equipment. The only requirement is an Amazon Prime subscription. To customize the feature, viewers can select the Audio and Subtitles menu in a movie and choose either English Dialogue Boost: Medium or English Dialogue Boost: High.
Initially, Dialogue Boost will be available for a limited selection of Amazon Originals in English within the United States, such as The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. However, plans to extend the feature to other titles are expected later this year. When queried about the possibility of supporting additional languages, Amazon remained tight-lipped, with a company representative providing little information but promising to keep users informed.
It is noteworthy that Amazon has been investing in sound output improvements in recent months. In February, the company introduced an innovative update for Fire TV devices, enabling them to stream audio directly into hearing implants, a feature absent from other smart TV lines. As Amazon continues to develop the quality of movie sound, one can't help but wonder if an Image Booster might be introduced in the future to address overly dark film scenes.
